چکیده

Natural regeneration of tree species is sensitive to silvicultural interventions. This study aimed investigate the effects different cutting intensities and local topographic soil conditions on composition stable carbon (δ13C) oxygen (δ18O) isotopes in wood young beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees. Beech saplings layer were sampled summer 2018 at three sites Dinaric fir-beech forests karst area Slovenia. Three performed 2012: i) no (control), ii) 50% stand’s growing stock creating thinned stands, iii) 100% 0.4 ha canopy gaps. We show that δ13C increased along gradient intensity. On average, values rings ∼ 2‰ trees from gaps than closed control stands. Furthermore, was higher south-facing slopes characterized by air temperatures lower relative humidity compared north-facing sinkholes. Additionally, results suggest a dependence δ18O interannual cross-site climatic variations, particularly case precipitation amount. also responded depth, with individuals exhibiting deeper soils, presumably water availability shallow soils. The are discussed context future climate change, as many beech-dominated terrain Mountains affected warming drying due prolonged reoccurring droughts, intensified large-scale disturbances, often soils low storage capacity.

Studies on European beech (Fagus sylvatica L

Colour parameters of European beech were measured using CIELab system. 103 logs from 87 trees in 9 sites were cut into boards to study the variations of wood colour parameters. Both site and tree effect on colour were observed. Patterns of red heartwood occurrence were defined. When excepting red heartwood there was still a highly significant effect of site and tree; differences remained after ...

Fate of recently fixed carbon in European beech (Fagus sylvatica) saplings during drought and subsequent recovery.

Drought reduces the carbon (C) assimilation of trees and decouples aboveground from belowground carbon fluxes, but little is known about the response of drought-stressed trees to rewetting. This study aims to assess dynamics and patterns of C allocation in beech saplings under dry and rewetted soil conditions. In October 2010, 5-year-old beech saplings from a forest site were transplanted into ...

Variation in Ecophysiological Traits and Drought Tolerance of Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) Seedlings from Different Populations

Frequency and intensity of heat waves and drought events are expected to increase in Europe due to climate change. European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is one of the most important native tree species in Europe. Beech populations originating throughout its native range were selected for common-garden experiments with the aim to determine whether there are functional variations in drought stress ...

Insights into xylem vulnerability to cavitation in Fagus sylvatica L.: phenotypic and environmental sources of variability.

Xylem vulnerability to cavitation is a key parameter in understanding drought resistance of trees. We determined the xylem water pressure causing 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity (P(50)), a proxy of vulnerability to cavitation, and we evaluated the variability of this trait at tree and population levels for Fagus sylvatica. We checked for the effects of light on vulnerability to cavitation of...

Phenotypic Plasticity Explains Response Patterns of European Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) Saplings to Nitrogen Fertilization and Drought Events

Climate and atmospheric changes affect forest ecosystems worldwide, but little is known about the interactive effects of global change drivers on tree growth. In the present study, we analyzed single and combined effects of nitrogen (N) fertilization and drought events (D) on the growth of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) saplings in a greenhouse experiment. We quantified morphological and p...
